About Otter
Otter.ai creates technologies and products that make information from important voice conversations instantly accessible and actionable
Price is reasonable, and even the cheapest subscription plan provides a significant amount of transcription time. It takes relatively little time to upload and transcribe recordings.
I synced my calendar, but it started picking up things I didn't want to record and became annoying, so I disconnected it.

Accurate Transcription of Selected Calls of 60+ Minutes
Comments: Accurate transcriptions are key for us.
Pros:
The transcript is very accurate, rarely any need for a manual correction.
Cons:
Offers way more features than we actually need and use.
Alternatives Considered:
Easy transcription and recording
Comments: I can login to my Otter dashboard and see at a glance which calls are upcoming, past recordings and transcriptions, and available features. It's fairly user-friendly. Otter is now my go-to for recording and transcribing calls. Otter timestamps, generates notes, and identifies action items and highlights from my meetings.
Pros:
I love the instant transcription feature and the fact that you can 'set and forget' Otter with your meetings -- the app will ask to join your calls and take notes, summarize your conversations, and can even take screenshots so you don't forget details.
Cons:
I can't figure out how to uninvite Otter to some of my events that are offline and don't have a conference call, even if I toggle the app off in specific events in the dashboard. Otter still tries to attend the event in my calendar reminding me when my kid's kindergarten starts and stops. :) I've toggled it 'off' for this event in the dashboard, but that hasn't resolved the issue. I consider this to be a minor problem given how powerful the app is for my workflow. By the way, I haven't had an issue removing or uninviting Otter from a video conference call, JUST in-person events, which Otter can't 'attend' anyway! LOL.
Great if your recordings are all clear with no background noise.
Comments: It was inexpensive but required a lot of time double-checkin the transcriptions which was very frustrating. If you have audio that is clear and concise, it would work fine but if there's background noise or accents, it often wouldn't pick up correctly.
Pros:
It was inexpensive and easy to use and integrate.
Cons:
The transcriptions often come out very strange and inaccurate.
A Must-Have Tool for Productivity
Comments: Using Otter has been a game-changer for my productivity. Its ability to transcribe meetings and notes accurately has saved me countless hours.
Pros:
Otter is incredibly user-friendly and intuitive. It has streamlined my workflow significantly.
Cons:
While Otter is excellent, it occasionally struggles with accurately transcribing complex technical terms. However, this is a minor issue compared to its overall utility.
Alternatives Considered:
Otter: Easy to Use Middlemarket English Transcription
Comments: Otter is easy to use and would make a great edition to your corporate toolbelt. However, it's per user price and issues with certain speakers, mean that this might be your backup choice insofar as transcription.
Pros:
Otter is easy to use and can even record directly from your microphone (thus getting around the rigamarole of inviting the AI assistant into specific meetings/dealing with outages.
Cons:
Otter can only really transcribe English, and even then fast speakers, individuals with heavy accents, or irregular speech patterns (repeated use of 'uh' , 'ah' and other fillers, raising and lowering one's voice multiple times in a sentence, etc) seems to baffle it.
Buyer beware
Comments:
Poor
got my money and don't respond to my customer support requests
Pros:
It was good until they changed the terms after 2 months of new contract. Then they instituted limits and would not respond to my customer support requests.
Cons:
It was good until they changed the terms after 2 months of new contract. Then they instituted limits and would not respond to my customer support requests.
Otter Experience
Pros:
You don't have to worry about taking notes during meetings.
Cons:
The free subscription is very limited if you attend meetings regularly which is capped at 300 monthly transcription minutes; 30 minutes per conversation.
Good Experience but Needs WHOLE MEETING Recording Time
Comments: I had an overall good experience with this software.
Pros:
It is user friendly and automatically starts recording after the meeting starts.
Cons:
You only get 30 minutes of recoding time for the free version!
Good for concurrent meetings and transcription
Pros:
While having an interview, it is good to record and transcribe the meeting concurrently.
Cons:
I liked the Otter ai and tried to subscribe it but it was too expensive.
Integrates well
Pros:
Integrates well with MS products. Provides great summary reports.
Cons:
Need to manually select which meetings to attend.
Otter
Comments: Accurate on point note taking so I’m not missing important information during state and supervisory meetings.
Pros:
The feature that I found to be most impactful for this software was the fact that you won’t miss any key points during the meeting. Any important details shared you’ve got.
Cons:
I don’t like that it automatically invites itself to all my zoom meetings once its synced to my calendar
Otter is amazing
Comments: Tremendous.
Pros:
Everything it is so good I can ramble on about it forever
Cons:
Genuinely, I have 0 complaints. Everything about this software is amazing, it even links to my calendar and pre-names my interviews
A great companion for journalists
Comments: Otter is an amazing tool for journalists on a deadline. It allows you to navigate through a transcript relatively easily, play back excerpts, and make corrections to the transcript inside the interface. It’s not easy to organize conversations, however, and that’s a downside.
Pros:
Otter cuts down the time it takes to navigate through interviews. It lets you record and transcribe conversations in real time and you can highlight phrases or sentences during the recording. That’s a fantastic feature for identifying phrases and quotes you may need later. The keyword search is also really helpful and you can pause the recording at any time and restart it. It’s a lifesaver for long, complicated meetings.
Cons:
It’s not perfect. Otter has a hard time with accents and fragmented speech. You still have to review the excerpts you plan to use, because Otter routinely drops words or misunderstands technical phrases.
Excellent app - life made easy
Comments: Impressed with the amount of time I'm able to save.
Pros:
The fact that it can hear even accents. I am impressed that it can also correct itself as it transcribes.
Cons:
It cannot understand when a speaker is using isiXhosa language. It tries to type the sounds in English.
Best Software for Transcription and Note Taking
Pros:
This software has a good user interface for both computer and mobile devices. Its playback option is a unique feature along with its capability of transcribing in real time.
Cons:
It is a good software given the task it accomplishes yet some features like the upload time of video files could be upgraded at a more convenient position.
Perfect for college students & work meetings
Comments: Overall, I think it’s a super helpful tool for people who need notes and audio to remember important details during meetings, presentations or lectures.
Pros:
I liked this software a lot as I utilized it a lot in college. I had to focus on writing notes fast otherwise the presentation slides would disappear as my professor was discussing the lecture. This allowed me to focus on writing notes while recording the lecture. Then go back and listen to the lecture if I didn’t get focus on what they were saying.
Cons:
I didn’t like that I had to go back and check for errors in audio translation to text. Sometimes words would not make sense for the context, so I would need to go back and listen to the audio to figure out what words were actually said.
Otter is the best app for people who are bad at taking notes
Comments: I use Otter whenever I am playtesting my board games. I open the app, set it down, push record, and then I’m able to be involved with the people sitting at the table and give them my full attention. I never have to worry about writing down notes that I don’t understand or can’t read later on because Otter has taken care of it all for me.
Pros:
Being able to set my phone down and hold a conversation without having to pause and write stuff down. I love being able to replay the recording while reading what Otter typed up and edit it if there were any errors. I also loved how it somehow recognizes who is speaking and assigns colors and separates their dialogue in the transcript automatically.
Cons:
Since this is an AI assistant that responds to voice, there are bound to be problems. Otter is not perfect. People with accents and people that sound a lot alike don’t always register right on the transcript. However, it is so simple to edit your transcript afterwards, this issue becomes a non-issue.
Essential for our interviews
Comments: As a nonprofit media organization with a team of volunteer reporters, Otter makes it easy for us to capture every interview and get stories written in an efficient way.
Pros:
Otter works seamlessly as a desktop or mobile app, making recording and transcription available wherever our reporters may be.
Cons:
Otter recently reduced the free version of the software to 30 minutes of transcription, rather than 45.
Has its limitations, but a valuable tool!
Comments: Efficient back-up to call/meeting notes. Works well on mobile (for recording & playback; you may want something bigger for interrogating recordings).
Pros:
Combines audio recording with transcription. This is useful as it enables you to search your recording for phrases or keywords. Being able to click on any section of the transcription text & hear that part of the recording is also helpful.
Cons:
Transcription quality is mixed. Do not use if you're expecting perfection & are unwilling to replay sections...
Life-saver for taking notes and making transcripts
Pros:
Otter offers highly accurate audio transcription and recording. The best part is that you can click on phrases and sentences in a transcription to replay the corresponding recording. The software can identify new voices/speaker chances as well. This is a god-send for saving time and improving accuracy for transcribing meets, podcasts, or videos.
Cons:
The free version only allows 30 minutes of transcription at a time. If you need to record/transcribe longer than that however, you can just start a new transcription recording.
Perfect for Taking Notes
Comments: I now don't take any notes. I just hit record and have a natural conversation, which is so much more useful in my line of work.
Pros:
I love the ability to take photos of something that will appear in the transcription exactly where we are discussing it. The ability to recognize past speakers is really useful. It does a lot even in the free version.
Cons:
They recently started restricting free users to a transcription limit. It's not too bad, and you can work around it by just started a new voice recording, but it's less helpful than before. Not enough to stop using it though.
Run a Podcast? Seriously think about using Otter
Pros:
Great for use in various situations, much more than just an automatic transcriber. The interface and bubble style interface for identifying speakers are super useful. Being able to train the software to recognize your own or other voices is also quite useful.
Cons:
File upload system could be cleaner. It definitely has a learning curve to overcome.
Almost Accurate But Not Perfect
Pros:
Otter is a great tool for transcribing audio files. I've used it for transcribing some audio files that I had to convert into blog posts. It's been fairly accurate, and the automatic splitting of the files into different speakers is helpful.
Cons:
If the speaker is a non-native English speaker or has a heavy accent, Otter will often struggle to understand them. This can be frustrating and lead to inaccurate transcriptions. Also, the free version only allows users to transcribe 3 audio files — that's the lifetime limit, not per month.
Constantly reconnected
Pros:
Setup Integration choices Pricing Customer support
Cons:
Constantly dropping connections to third party intergrations
Great tool if you have alot of meetings
Pros:
Otter is a useful tool for transcribing and organizing audio recordings. Its AI-powered transcription is accurate and saves me time.
Cons:
One potential downside of using Otter is that it may not be 100% accurate in transcribing all spoken words, especially if the audio quality is poor or there are multiple speakers with different accents. This can lead to some transcription errors that may need to be corrected manually.
